Read this chapter for information about memory, disk, and network options you can install to enhance your printer's performance.

Before You Install Options

Complete the steps below before you install a Printer Memory Option, Flash Memory Option, Disk Option, or Network Option. Instructions for installing and using the options follow.

l. Turn the printer power Off (O) and unplug the power cord from the printer.

2. Disconnect all cables from the back of the printer.

3. Open the printer top cover.

4. Press the blue button to open the right side cover.

5. Locate the appropriate connector for the option you want to install.

Printer Memory Option

The Printer Memory Option increases the printer's random access memory (RAM). Additional printer memory allows the printer to print complex jobs and operate more efficiently. Anything that is stored in printer memory is lost when the printer is turned off.

Your printer was shipped with a 2MB (Optra R) or 4MB (Optra L and Optra Lx) memory card installed. You can buy optional cards with 2MB, 4MB, 8MB, I 6MB, or 32MB of memory. The number of megabytes is indicated on the card.

If you want to add additional RAM memory, you can either:

• Install one additional memory card
• Install two memory cards

To install two optional cards, you must first remove the factory-installed memory card from the memory connector (see "Removing a Memory Card" on page 176). Installing two memory options offers a maximum of 64MB of printer memory.

The printer will not function unless a card is installed in either memory connector 1 or memory connector 2.

Installing a Printer Memory Option

If you are installing two optional memory cards:

• Remove the existing memory card from the printer system board (see "Removing a Memory Card" on page 176).
• Install an optional memory card in memory connector 2 first.
• Install the other optional memory card in memory connector 1.

Before you install a memory card, follow the steps under "Before You Install Options" starting on page 171.

Warning: The memory card is easily damaged by static electricity. Touch something metal before you touch the memory card.

1. Unpack the optional memory card. Avoid touching the connection points along the edge of the card. Save the packaging.

2. Hold the card with the arrow pointing toward the printer, the label facing down, and the notch on the left. (When the card is correctly installed, the arrow and the number are not visible.)

Warning: Before you continue, make sure printer power is Off (O) !

3. Insert the memory card all the way into the connector at a 45° angle.

4. Push the card up until it snaps into place.

Make sure both metal clips on the connector are fastened and the two pins on the connector are pushed through the holes on the memory card.

5. If you are installing a second card, repeat steps 1 to 4, installing the card on the other memory connector.

6. If you need to install another option on the system board:

• See "Flash Memory Option" starting on page 177.
• See "Disk Option" starting on page 181.
• See "Network Option" starting on page 185.

    Otherwise, continue with step 7.

7. Close the printer side cover and top cover.

8. Go to "Verifying Installations" on page 192.

Removing a Memory Card

Warning: The memory card is easily damaged by static electricity. Touch something metal before you touch the memory card.

1. If necessary, follow the steps under "Before You Install Options" on page 171 to access the printer system board.

2. Locate the memory card you want to remove.

3. Push out on the metal clips at each end of the connector and rotate the card downward. Gently pull the card away from the connector.

4. Place the card in its original packaging. If you did not save the packaging, wrap the card in paper and store it in a box.

5. If you need to install a replacement card or other option on the system board:

• See "Printer Memory Option" starting on page 172.
• See "Flash Memory Option" starting on page 177.
• See "Disk Option" starting on page 181.
• See "Network Option" starting on page 185.

    Otherwise, continue with step 6.

6. Close the printer side cover and top cover.

7. Reconnect the printer cables.

8. Plug the power cord into the printer.

Flash Memory Option

Flash memory is useful for storing information like downloaded fonts and macros. Information stored in flash memory is retained when the printer is turned off and can be quickly retrieved by the printer.

You can buy Flash Memory Options with lMB, 2MB, or 4MB of flash memory.

Use the Toolkit utility shipped with your printer to download fonts, symbol sets, or macros to flash memory. Refer to the Techncal Reference for more details about using your Flash Memory Option.

Installing a Flash Memory Option

Before you install the flash memory card, follow the steps under "Before You Install Options" on page 171. If you need to remove a flash memory card first, see "Removing a Flash Memory Card" on page 180.

Warning: The flash memory card is easily damaged by static electricity. Touch something metal before you touch the memory card.

1. Unpack the flash memory card. Avoid touching the connection points along the edge of the card.

2. Hold the flash memory card vertically with the arrow pointing toward the printer.

    Warning: Before you continue, make sure printer power is Off (O) !

3. Insert the flash memory card all the way into the connector at a 45° anle.

4. Press the card back toward the system board until it snaps into place.

5. Make sure both metal clips on the connector are fastened and the two pins on the connector are pushed through the holes in the flash memory card.

6. If you need to install another option on the system board:

• See "Printer Memory Option" starting on page 172.
• See "Disk Option" starting on page 181.
• See "Network Option" starting on page 185.

    Otherwise, continue with step 7.

7. Close the printer side cover and top cover.

8. Go to "Verifying Installations" on page 192.

Removing a Flash Memory Card

Warning: The flash memory card is easily damaged by static electricity. Touch something metal before you touch the memory card.

1. If necessary, follow the steps under "Before You Install Options" on page 171 to access the printer system board.

2. Locate the flash memory card.

3. Push out on the metal clips at each end of the connector, and gently pull the card away from the connector.

4. Place the card in its original packaging. If you did not save the packaging, wrap the card in paper and store it in a box.

5. If you need to install a replacement card or other option on the system board:

• See "Printer Memory Option" starting on page 172.
• See "Flash Memory Option" starting on page 177.
• See "Disk Option" starting on page 181.
• See "Network Option" starting on page 185.

Otherwise, continue with step 6.

6. Close the printer side cover and top cover.

7. Reconnect the printer cables.

8. Plug the power cord into the printer.

Disk Option

Like the Flash Memory Option, the Disk Option is useful for storing information such as downloaded fonts and macros. The Disk Option consists of a 40MB hard disk and a thumbscrew. The printer has two connectors on the system board that can be used for either a Disk Option or a Network Option. You can install two Network Options, or one Network Option and one Disk Option.

Warning: The disk is easily damaged by static electricity. Touch something metal before you touch the disk.

Installing the Disk Option

Before you install the Disk Option, follow the steps under "Before You Install Options" on page 171. If you need to remove a disk, see "Removing a Network or Disk Option" on page 191.

1. Locate the two Disk Option connectors on the system board. You can install the disk in either connector. (If you are also installing a Network Option, install a card in connector 1 first.)

2. Unpack the Disk Option. Save the packing materials.

3. Hold the disk as shown. The connector should be at the top of the disk facing the printer.

     Warning: Before you continue, make sure printer power is Off (O) !

4. Install the disk in either connector 1 or 2:

    a Line up the connector on the disk with the connector on the system board.

    b Line up the hole on the disk with the post on the system board.

    c Push in the disk until it is completely inserted into the system board connector. The two connectors should lt           snugly together. Be sure the post on the system boald is inserted through the hole on the disk.

5. Attach the bottom of the disk to the system board with the thumbscrew.

6. If you need to install another option on the system board:

• See "Printer Memory Option" starting on page 172.
• See "Flash Memory Option' starting on page 177.
• See "Network Option" starting on page 185.

Otherwise, continue with step 7.

7. Close the printer side cover and top cover.

8. Go to "Verifying Installations" starting on page 192.

Network Option

Installing a Network Option enables you to connect the printer to a local area network (LAN). These Network Options can be installed on your printer:

• Token-Ring
• Ethernet (lOBASE2 or 10BASE-T)
• LocalTalk**

The Network Option consists of a network card, a thumbscrew, a diskette containing the Network Printer Utility, and documentation. Refer to this documentation for detailed information about your specific network card.

A unique network cable is required to connect the printer to the LAN and is determined by the type of LAN you have. This cable must be purchased separately.

The printer has two connectors on the system board that can be used for either a Network Option or a Disk Option. You can install two Network Options, or one Network Option and one Disk Option. The network card installation instructions are the same regardless of the type of Network Option purchased.

Installing a Network Card

Before you install a network card, follow the steps under "Before You Install Options" starting on page 171. If you need to remove a network card, see "Removing a Network or Disk Option" starting on page 191.

Warning: The network card is easily damaged by static electricity. Touch something metal before you touch the network card.

1. Locate the two Network Option connectors on the system board. You can install the network card in either connector. If you are installing two network cards, it may be easier to install a card in connector 1 first.

2. Unpack the network card. Save the original packing material.

3. Hold the network card so the component side faces the printer. The connector should be at the top of the card.

All of the network cards have a similar size and shape. The main difference between them is the network cable connector on the bottom right corner of the card.

The instructions in this section show a Token-Ring connector on the card. If you are installing a different card, the connector may look different.

4. Install the network card:

    a Line up the network cable connector on the network card with the opening on the back of the printer.

    b Line up the network card connector with the system board connector.

   c Line up the holes in the network card with the plastic posts on the system board.

       Warning: Before you continue, make sure printer power is Off (O) !

   d Push in the network card until it is completely connected and it snaps into place. The two connectors should fit        snugly together. Be sure the plastic posts on the system board are inserted through the holes on the network card.
